Hebridean Science Festival 2012
8th – 17th March
The Hebridean Science Festival is back! This year’s festival promises to be even bigger and better than last year. Participants include former Buzzcock John Maher, who now builds VW Beetle engines. Mr Boom will be returning to the islands to entertain the younger children, and a number of local businesses are taking part. Autoparts, Scottish Water, the Scottish Salmon Company, Kiwi’s Garage, Explore Science Scotland and SEPA are among those contributing.
The Scottish Government has recognised the economic importance of having a skilled workforce trained in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) careers. They are funding groups and initiatives to raise awareness of STEM careers and inspire young people to take up these subjects.
ESTEEM is a voluntary group with the aim of inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians from the Western Isles. We aspire to do this by working with young people, parents and teachers and establishing links between them and local business partners.
Stornoway Astronomical Society will be running a number of events during the science festival. Visit the 'Lewis and Harris Public Events' page for more information, or the SAS website, www.stornowayastro.org
